NO
West U Resident, Ken Hoffman, sent the following question to all candidates.
If you are elected, will you direct the police to enforce the law prohibiting parking on the sidewalk - and to enforce the law without having to wait for a resident to squeal on a neighbor?
At the candidates’ forum, all of you said you were against people parking on the sidewalk. Will you pledge to something about it, and not buckle when some people complain about getting warnings and tickets?

The parking on sidewalks issue has come up before and past mayors and councils tried to enforce the law already in place. The problem is that new houses and garages, especially on corner lots, are built so close to the street any car parked on their driveway is blocking the sidewalk. Also, some older residents could not access their garages (garage doors no longer opened or they just couldn't lift the old heavy wooden doors).I recall the children of one such resident applying to the city for an exception for their elderly parent. If people can't park in their driveway, they will park on the street which is another problem West U has: too many cars parked on the streets.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. I think the city would be well served to consider exceptions to this ordinance on a case by case basis.

Nothing is more obnoxious than someone who lives in a $3 million corner home parking on top of the sidewalk. Park your car in your garage, or on the street. Sidewalks are for pedestrians, not for parking.
ReplyDeleteThe STATE LAW prohibiting parking on the sidewalk doesn't provide for exceptions. None. Tell a handicapped person in a wheelchair that he has to go into the street because the person in the $4 corner home wants to park in front of his garage.
